Cuba's daily COVID-19 cases near 3,000

HAVANA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Cuba on Sunday registered 2,723 confirmed cases and two more deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the number of infections to 977,410 and the death toll to 8,328, the health ministry reported.

Currently, there are 8,495 active cases of the disease in the country, with 38 patients in intensive care units.

The central Cuban province of Camaguey registered the highest number of new infections, with 438, followed by the western provinces of Pinar del Rio (346) and Matanzas (274).

The island has so far recorded close to 100 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, the ministry said.

To date, the country has vaccinated more than 86 percent of its population with Cuban-made COVID-19 vaccines, and over 20 percent of Cuban nationals have received booster shots.
